Man Suffers Gunshot Wound to the Head After Buchanan County Altercation

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Mo. — A 65-year-old Buchanan County man is recovering after authorities say he was shot and severely assaulted during a confrontation Tuesday morning that reportedly began after his cat was struck by a vehicle.

According to the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to Atchison Hospital to speak with the victim, who had reported being attacked at a residence in the 11900 block of Northshore Drive.
Investigators say the victim told deputies that two men in a vehicle ran over his cat, leading to a verbal confrontation. During the dispute, both men allegedly got out of the vehicle.
Authorities say one of the suspects then shot the victim in the head before both men allegedly assaulted him using a bicycle frame.
Due to the severity of his injuries, the victim was later flown by air ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center for additional treatment.
The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office said detectives have carried out multiple search warrants and are continuing to follow investigative leads with assistance from other law enforcement agencies.
