1. Venture Department Store

Before Walmart dominated the retail landscape, Venture was one of the area's most popular discount department stores. Families visited Venture for everything from clothing and toys to housewares, electronics, and school supplies.

For many children

growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, a trip to Venture meant picking out a new backpack before school or searching the toy aisles during the holidays. The store became a weekend destination for countless families.

Unfortunately, financial struggles forced the chain into bankruptcy in the late 1990s, and its St. Joseph location closed along with the rest of the company. Even today, longtime residents often remember the distinctive blue and red logo and the excitement of shopping there.

2. Montgomery Ward

For decades, Montgomery Ward was one of America's most recognizable department stores, and St. Joseph was no exception.

Long before online shopping existed, Montgomery Ward offered nearly everything a household could need. Clothing, appliances, furniture, automotive supplies, electronics, and tools all filled its shelves. Many residents also remember browsing the famous Montgomery Ward catalogs, which served as a shopping guide before the internet.

The company eventually struggled to compete with newer retailers and officially closed all stores in 2001, marking the end of more than a century of business.

3. Woolworth

7. Kmart

For decades, Kmart was one of St. Joseph's busiest retailers.
