Dog Stays With Missing 3-Year-Old Until Search Crews Find Child Safe

ATCHISON COUNTY, Kan. — A search for a missing 3-year-old ended with good news Thursday afternoon when crews found the child safe in rural Atchison County.

Responders say the child was not alone. Maverick, the family dog, was found with the child and is believed to have stayed by the child’s side during the entire incident.

Atchison County Emergency Services said its rescue and EMS divisions joined the search at the request of the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple local and state agencies, along with volunteers and family members, assisted in the response.

After the child was located and returned safely to family, responders made sure Maverick received plenty of treats and attention for sticking close during the search.

Authorities did not report any injuries to the child. The incident drew assistance from several area fire departments, law enforcement agencies and Kansas state agencies.
