St. Joseph Salon Giving Free Back-to-School Haircuts to Local Students

A local St. Joseph salon is helping students head back to the classroom looking and feeling their best — at no cost to their families.

Unique Creations Salon and Barbershop, located at 3601 Faraon Street, is offering free back-to-school haircuts Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is open to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

For owner Adam Meisinger and his team, the annual event is about more than just cutting hair. It is another opportunity for the locally owned business to give something back to the community it serves.

“It is our mission to give back to the community as much as we can,” Meisinger said. “We all love seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces and the fellowship that takes place.”

Last year, Unique Creations provided 108 free haircuts during its back-to-school event. This year, the salon hopes to meet or surpass that number.

Giving Back Beyond Back-to-School

The generosity doesn't stop when school starts.

Each November, Unique Creations also provides free haircuts to people experiencing homelessness as part of the Walk for the Homeless, continuing the salon's effort to use its services to support people throughout St. Joseph.

The shop also regularly offers $10 haircuts to several groups in the community, including military members, firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, Mosaic Life Care employees, Northwest Health Services employees, and Missouri Western State University students and faculty.

Unique Creations currently operates with three stylists, including one licensed barber.

For families dealing with the added expenses that come with a new school year, something as simple as a free haircut can make a difference. And for more than 100 St. Joseph kids last year, it also meant walking into the first days of school with a little extra confidence.
