Missouri Primary Election Day Guide: What Voters Need to Know Before Heading to the Polls

Missouri voters will head to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in the state's primary election, choosing party nominees for state auditor, congressional races, state legislative seats, and deciding several proposed constitutional amendments.

If you're planning to vote, here's what you need to know before leaving home.

Poll Hours

Polling places across Missouri will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Anyone who is in line by 7:00 p.m. has the right to cast a ballot, even if voting continues after the official closing time.

Find Your Polling Place

Before heading out, voters are encouraged to verify their voter registration and polling location. Some precinct locations may have changed, so checking ahead of time can help avoid confusion.

Many county election authorities also provide updated polling information on their websites or by phone. Check out Missouri Voting Center for all your voting information.

Know What's on Your Ballot

Most local election authorities publish sample ballots online before Election Day. Reviewing your ballot in advance can help speed up the voting process and allow you time to research candidates and ballot measures before arriving at the polls.

Acceptable Photo Identification

Missouri law requires registered voters to present an approved photo ID in order to receive a regular ballot.

Accepted forms of identification include:

• A Missouri driver's license or nondriver ID card that is unexpired or expired after Nov. 5, 2024

• An unexpired U.S. military or veteran identification card

• An unexpired U.S. passport

• Another qualifying photo ID issued by the State of Missouri or the federal government that is unexpired or expired after Nov. 5, 2024

Voters without an acceptable photo ID may still cast a provisional ballot. That ballot can be counted if the voter later provides valid identification on Election Day or if election officials verify the voter's identity through the signature on file.

Campaign Clothing and Ballot Photos

Campaigning is not allowed inside polling places. Missouri law prohibits wearing clothing or accessories promoting a candidate or ballot issue while inside the polling location.

Electioneering is also prohibited within at least 25 feet of the entrance to a polling place, though some local election authorities may establish a 50-foot boundary.

Voters should also avoid taking photos of completed ballots or sharing images that reveal how they voted, as Missouri law prohibits intentionally displaying a marked ballot.
