This Week in St. Joseph: Crime, Schools, Chiefs Camp and Community Updates

It was another busy week across St. Joseph, with law enforcement investigating multiple violent incidents, the Kansas City Chiefs officially returning for training camp, school leadership changes, and several public safety initiatives taking place around the city.

Crime and Public Safety

Public safety dominated headlines throughout the week.

A targeted Drug Strike Force operation resulted in the execution of 21 warrants, marking one of the area's larger coordinated law enforcement efforts this summer. The operation involved multiple agencies working together to locate wanted individuals throughout Buchanan County.

The St. Joseph Police Department also investigated multiple overnight shootings, including a shooting on Messanie Street that left one man with se

rious injuries. Detectives continue investigating the incidents and have asked anyone with information to contact authorities.

In Buchanan County, investigators are also working a disturbing case in which a 65-year-old man was allegedly shot and assaulted following an argument after his cat was run over. The victim was airlifted for medical treatment while investigators executed several search warrants as the investigation continued.

Traffic safety remained another focus for local police. Results from a recent Belt Highway enforcement campaign showed officers conducted 41 traffic stops, issuing 11 citations and 33 warnings for offenses including speeding, driving without insurance, suspended licenses and seat belt violations. Police say the Belt Highway remains one of St. Joseph's highest-crash corridors and additional enforcement efforts are planned.

Chiefs Training Camp Returns

Football season officially feels underway as the Kansas City Chiefs returned to Missouri Western State University for training camp.

Fans have once again begun traveling to St. Joseph to watch practices as rookies, quarterbacks and veterans prepare for the 2026 NFL season. Head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes returned to the practice fields, bringing thousands of visitors and a significant economic boost to local hotels, restaurants and businesses over the coming weeks.

Education

The St. Joseph School District announced several administrative appointments ahead of the upcoming school year, filling leadership positions as preparations continue for students to return in August.

Meanwhile, the St. Joseph Board of Education voted to oppose Missouri Amendment 5, adding the district's voice to the statewide discussion ahead of the upcoming election.

Community and Local Government

Local government also remained active this week.
