Traffic Enforcement Initiative Along Belt Highway Leads to Multiple Citations, SJPD Reports

The St. Joseph Police Department is highlighting the results of a recent traffic enforcement campaign conducted along the Belt Highway, a roadway officials say continues to experience a high number of crashes.

The focused enforcement effort took place on July 10 and was part of the department's ongoing strategy to improve traffic safety and discourage hazardous driving behaviors in high-risk areas.

During the operation, officers conducted 41 traffic stops, issuing 11 citations and 33 warnings for various traffic and vehicle-related violations.

The citations included:

• Speeding — 2

• No proof of insurance — 3

• Seat belt violations — 2

• Driving with a suspended or revoked license — 1

• No valid driver's license — 1

• Illegal left turn — 1

• Expired license plates — 1

  
  

In addition to the citations, officers issued warnings for a variety of violations, including:

• Speeding — 8

• Expired license plates — 8

• Defective equipment — 5

• Improper display of license plates — 4

• Other traffic offenses — 5

• Stop sign violation — 1

• Traffic signal violation — 1

• Failure to yield — 1

• Turn signal violation — 1

Police say the Belt Highway remains one of the city's busiest and most crash-prone roadways, making targeted enforcement an important tool in reducing collisions and improving overall safety for drivers.

"Our priority along the Belt Highway and across all of St. Joseph is simple: save lives," Police Chief Paul Luster said. "High-crash areas demand proactive policing. Every stop made, whether it results in a citation or an educational warning, serves as a direct reminder that safe driving is a non-negotiable standard in our community."

The department says it will continue conducting high-visibility traffic enforcement efforts throughout St. Joseph while also promoting driver education. Officials are reminding motorists to wear seat belts, follow posted speed limits, avoid distracted driving, maintain proper vehicle registration and insurance, and obey all traffic laws to help make local roadways safer.
