Gower Man Killed After Explosive Device Detonates During Police Pursuit

GOWER, Mo. — A 54-year-old Gower man was killed Saturday after an explosive device detonated inside his vehicle during a pursuit involving law enforcement, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the man as Christopher Williams.

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. Saturday when deputies were called to Gower for a report of a person who was potentially suicidal. Investigators said Williams had allegedly made threats about “suicide by cop” and was believed to be armed with both a firearm and explosive devices.

Deputies located Williams outside a residence near Gower at approximately 12:20 p.m. According to the sheriff’s office, Williams was carrying a black backpack and refused commands from deputies before getting into a vehicle and driving away.

A pursuit followed.

During the chase, authorities said Williams drove directly toward deputies while holding what appeared to be an explosive device outside the driver’s-side window.

The pursuit eventually moved into an open field behind a Gower business after Williams drove off a restaurant driveway.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., an explosion occurred inside Williams’ vehicle. Debris and shrapnel from the blast struck nearby law enforcement vehicles, but no officers were injured.

The Kansas City Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene to examine and clear the vehicle. Authorities said investigators later discovered a second explosive device inside.

Williams died as a result of the incident.

Several law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation. The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead investigating agency.
