Gasoline Found in Sewer System Forces Closure of Woods Mini Mart Fuel Pumps

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Gasoline detected in a St. Joseph sewer line has led city officials to temporarily shut down fuel sales at Woods Mini Mart on Frederick Avenue.

The investigation began after residents in the area of 13th Street and Frederick Avenue reported smelling gasoline. City crews responded and began checking the sewer system to determine where the odor was coming from.

According to the City of St. Joseph, crews pumped the affected sewer line and worked with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as part of the investigation.

Testing conducted Thursday showed a high concentration of gasoline in the sewer system. Officials later traced the source to Woods Mini Mart, located at 1334 Frederick Ave.

The city ordered the store to immediately stop selling gasoline and receiving fuel deliveries.

Crews then flushed the affected sewer line until testing showed the gasoline concentration had been reduced to zero. As an added precaution, manholes along Frederick Avenue between 13th and 22nd streets were also flushed.

City officials said the area will continue to be monitored and additional action will be taken if needed to protect public safety.

The gas pumps at Woods Mini Mart will remain closed until further notice.

The convenience store itself remains open for business.
